When you are working on changing your own thoughts and challenging beliefs you have believed in for so many years, it's important to be exposed to new ideas and thoughts. I have found listening to podcasts a wonderful way to learn new things. These are some of my go to's.
Meditating can be as easy as sitting upright in a chair, focus on the breath (note “in” when you breath in, and count as you breathe out… count to 10 and then start again). As thoughts enter your mind acknowledge them and release them, and then come back to the breath. Do not beat yourself up in that moment, but celebrate that you caught the thought… that is the magic moment. That is when you get to choose to be different. Even if you have to come back to the breath and start over 1,000 times! And you don’t have to do it for hours at a time to make a difference. Five to ten minutes per day will make a world of difference.
When you are getting started and learning the ropes, using some guided meditations can be helpful. Here are some suggestions for you to explore. My favorite is 10% Happier. All of these have apps to use on your phones and can be found in the Google Play or the Apple App Store, and all offer free and paid versions. Explore and enjoy the journey of learning mindfulness.
